The Hennessey VelociRaptor Sure Is a Car

Hennessey VelociRaptor Front

Oh boy.

Look, I like Hennessey. I think what they do is great. Take a pedestrian Cadillac CTS-V that on its own makes a meager 556hp, ditch the supercharger and slap on a twin turbo setup, crank the boost, and watch it go all the way to 1200hp. Stretch a Lotus, toss in another twin turbo V8, and watch the bastard run with Bugattis and Koenigseggs. I’m all for taking cars that are already powerful enough and going bonkers under the hood in such an excessive way that the tuner could only hail from Texas. But the VelociRaptor is a Ford Raptor truck that replaces the cab with another row of seats and looks like an admittedly decent substitute for the dead Excursion. The price may shock you, however, so put down that venti before you ruin your keyboard.

The cost of the conversion is a cool $149,500. Resume drinking.

For that price, buyers get the 8-seat configuration, but the standard Raptor 411hp 6.2L V8 makes the VelociRaptor 1 second slower than my GTI when sprinting from 0-60mph. But this is America, damn it, and we can’t let our way of life be threatened by some rinky dink hatchback. How about 600hp at the top of the ladder? That’s enough to move mountains, and it does: the most potent VelociRaptor drops that time to a fraction under 6 seconds. The price for that monument to unreserved fuel lust is not yet public, but consider that there are plenty of other upgrades, such as Brembo brakes, custom interior, and even an armor package, that can all push this behemoth into uncharted territory for a limited production SUV. It would easily break $200,000 before any bespoke appointments could be made, and for that money, anyone could go buy a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and a Cayman S. Only 30 VelociRaptors will be made per year, and that makes me happy, because I probably won’t ever see one in real life.

Hennessey VelociRaptor Int

Forget the SUVs and focus on the lunatic sports cars. I hear the 2014 Corvette is going on sale soon…Wait, you already have a 1000hp tune for it? I knew I couldn’t stay mad at Hennessey for long.

About Cameron Rogers

Cameron Rogers is the founder and lead writer at Downshift Autos, the only automotive blog on the Internet*. Born in the back of an AMC Gremlin, Cameron vowed to never let this extraordinarily embarrassing detail define him, so help him God. He drives a GTI but absolutely will not shut up about it if somebody asks. He will not hesitate to let people know that no, they shouldn't get a Porsche 911 when a Morgan 3 Wheeler is so obviously the superior choice. He is obsessed with the seats of a Carrera GT and the steering wheel of a Fisker Karma. He once sat in the driver's seat of a Tesla Model S, his greatest accomplishment to date. He is just now realizing that writing an autobiography, however miniscule, in the third person is odd and unnerving. *As of this writing, Cameron has been informed that there are, in fact, many websites and blogs centered around cars and car culture. He regrets his grievous error.
